During these trying times, the orphan children of Bali have less support than they had before the lockdown, with no tourists donating or visiting Bali the costs to provide simple necessities like water, food & shelter has become more and more challenging to provide. Not to mention these Children have no outlet for play or creativity.
Being a Mother, and living on Bali for the last 6 years Rhonda’s heartstrings were pulled when she learned that there are 1,000’s of children living on the streets and dumpster sites on Bali and 100’s in the orphanage needing help. When she & Whitewolf learned about S.O.S Children Village and their needs they presented the idea to Erawan, the King of Keributan.
The strings players created a curriculum for the music program based on traditional old Balinese songs, rearranged and composed for guitar and violin and taught to the children in means to empower their culture. We have seen around the world many different cultures lose their language and their way due to the temptation of modern society from the west, and we all know that we have all been impacted by the kindness of the balinese and also the depth of their culture and connection.
The power of music and influence cannot only give them a sense of home within themselves, through the opportunity of expressing themselves and their emotions. Though it can also be used to empower their lineage, their culture, their language, so the heart strings project made it a necessity to base their curriculum on the traditions of their ancestral songs.
For a long time, music educators have suggested that music, either in the form of music education, music practice, or exposure to music, can have a significant impact on school achievement, school attendance rates and students’ conduct, both in elementary and secondary education (Koopman, 2005; Waller, 2007).
Educational scientists have addressed the question of what effects music education can have on child development, and have found effects on cognitive growth, such as the increase of the ability to concentrate and academic achievement. Also effects in the social and emotional domain have been reported, and in times like this kids need a place to find peace within themselves and music can be the guide.(Bastian, 2002; Elliott, 1995; Gardner, 2004).
